TOKIO HOTEL : From only 17 to 19, these 4 germans rock their world in germany for a year. First placed on the charts, tours sold out in the biggest places, everyone wants them: merchandise, fan club... A huge success which asks a question about their success when their album Schrei has just been released in France.

ROCKMAG: How the band got formed?
Bill Kaulitz : My twin brother Tom and I have been playing music since we were 7. We were 9 when we started to do concerts. I was singing and Tom was playing guitar. We met Georg and Gustav 6 years ago in a club. They already knew each other and were playing also for a longtime, bass and drums. We decided the 4 of us to form a band. A day, the producer David Jost saw us playing and that's how we could record our first album, with him and 3 other producers.

And why Tokio Hotel?
Our first name was Devilish, but we decided to change it as soon as we started to record with the producers, so we could start something new. We choose Tokyo because we love big towns, not necessarily a german one. As we are often on big tours, we sleep a lot at the hotel, which is something we love. So we choose Tokio Hotel and we think that it sounds pretty good! Obviously, we hope to play a day in Japan and in Tokyo, where we've never been.

What is your personal contribution in the writing and the composition of the songs ?
I write the texts with the producers. I give them a theme or they give me one to think about. Then we work all together. For example, for Durch Den Munsun, we started with some words I wrote - hinter der Welt - then we built the rest the 5 of us. The music is the other guys of the band and the producers's business, I don't deal with it at all.

You've wrote and composed Unendlichkeit without the producers. Does this song is particular for you?
The album was almost done when we wrote this song. We were all sat, writing and talking. It was a pleasant moment, we were quite relaxed. We were like in an another world. This song symbolise that moment, and also what we lived together in the studios.

Have you been surprised by your success?
Totally. When the 1st single Durch Den Munsun came out, it was total suspense. Then everything rushed just like that. Our producers, the recording company, our parents, no one was waiting for this kind of success, and neither we were.

When did you realized this phenomenon?
When the Schrei Tour started, our concerts were full, even in huge places. When you play every night in a sold out place, and suddently you're not in front of 5 people but 10'000, you realized that your band has grown. Our first success on stage are very important since we love playing with public. On the tour, we realized that we could spend all our time and efforts to do what we love: write, compose, play, travel and make people move because of our music.

Does the song Lass uns hier raus is dedicated to the people thinking that you are just a boys band or a phenomenon of fashion?
Exactly. The lyrics are ironic. We aren't a boys band, we have not been recruited on a casting and we're not going to split the next summer. Even if what happens to us looks like a dream, we've created the band ourselves, we do the music that we love and no matter if some people don't like.

Your projects?
With the same producers of Schrei , we're working on a new album which will come out soon in Germany. We're composing and writing it. We've already a few songs. We've even started to record. This new album is our priority for the moment, but we're also so impatient to play in countries like France.
