BAND OF BROTHER
Hambourg, Tuesday November 21st, we're with Tokio Hotel, in a studio shooting, just a few bloks from their place. Everyone is in a good mood, the four new german rock megastars are at last ready to answer our several questions. First part of an exclusive interview.
01. You just gave a concert in moscow. Was it a deosebit day for you?
Bill: Moscow, we liked it very much, it was an experience with so many surprises, so many emotions. We have an awesome memory of this city, first because it was a long time that we didn't play all together and then, there were 8'000 people in front of us. We liked very much the russian public.
02. In Russia, like in France, it might be weird for you to see your songs sung in German but not in Germany?
Tom: Indeed, that was the biggest surprise, but we were also very happy. When we were in Paris, we were very surprised to see that the public sung the songs in German. It was the same in Moscow. Our fans just started to sing the chorus in German and, for us, it was really incredible!
PROUD TO SING IN GERMAN
03. Are you proud of the success that you get through the frontiers?
Bill: Yes, of course, we're really proud of that, and realizing the dream that we had when we started, like travelling together, making concerts in foreign countries. Besides that it's pretty rare for a German band to have such a success in other countries with songs sung in our maternal language. When I think about it, I'm still surprise, and touched by the phenomenon created by our music.
04. Do you remember your first steps in music?
Bill: It started very early (laughs)! I was just 6 years old when I felt this strong feeling to do music, rock especially. I already had some ideas to make songs so, with Tom, my brother, we started to do bits and pieces while we were watching musicians on TV or listening to the rock CDs at home. Before imagining myself in front of a public and sing, I wanted first to write my own texts and music.
Tom: Being always together made us such a complicated temperament to do music. It has motivated us to progress.
05. Was it the same for you, Georg and Gustav?
Georg: Yeah, it was pretty similar in the way that I've always grown up with the music. I remember, when I was 8, going to a Rolling Stones concert. It was for me an important experience. It was clear that after that,my dream was to play in front of a huge public and living with the music. Young, my parents have always encouraged me to do music. I didn't have to hide for that, i think that it's not the same for everyone. I know that I had the chance that other doesn't have.
Gustav: It was the same for me. I've always lived and grown with the music. I remember myself watching with passion a video tape of Pink Floyd. I was 5. I think it was the first atingere with rock. Like a flash. I understant this day that I wanted to do that. The same night, I was already seeing myself at drums, starting to hit pans during the diner. That might got on my parents' nerves bu for me, I was starting to familiarize with rhythms. I was enjoying myself too.
06. In which way that helped you for Tokio Hotel, to grow up in families where rock was welcome?
Bill: My step-father was guitarist, he brought us in several concerts and in studios as well. We really wanted to do the same. Anyway, his influence is still very strong in the music of Tokio Hotel.
BEING A FAMOUS MUSICIAN
07. How, at the beginning, your own parents saw the band?
Tom: Our parents have always encouraged us. They supported us morally and with the money. At firct, it was just a hobby. Our parents didn't think that it will evolve this way, neither we though. As my step father had this dream to become a famous musician, he was the best to understand our choices. And it's true that we always felt very supported. As the band evolved, it became trust and even freedom. I remember that, for our first concerts, our parents took our instruments in their cars. And they let us stay very late avec concerts, in order to get the best of the music. What a luck we had!
08. Which feeling to do feel when you think about the beginning of the band? Nostalgy, Tenderness?
Bill: We think about our course, about the numerous things we've done with and thanks to the band. When you think that in just one year and a half, things went miraculously for us. And very quickly. We can't analyze what we lost because we took everything as happiness. It's incrediable and also funny to see what we live through the band. We travel a lot, so we don't have time to feel nostalgy. However, now, that we're older, and that our voice went deeper (laughs). We sometimes have some nostalgy for our past lives since everything changed so fast with the success of our first album. Our private lives are now out. We still are going to school, but we do more cocnerts. Now, we also do during the week, whereas at our debuts, we were playing only on weekends. You see, everything changed for us, we're more ambitious also. So, as a certain way, I can't tell you that we lost something. Anyway, if we take a look at our evolution, we can say that we're in the good way, the ones we always wanted.
EACH DAY IN ANOTHER CITY!
09. You live in Hamburg now. Is it different of Magdebourg where you spent, for most of you, you childhood?
Bill: In fact, it's different, it's bigger here. But, since we moved, we don't really have the feeling to live somewhere precisely, we live in all of these cities at the same time, given that we're always on tour, each day in another city! To be honest, we don't live at home but more in the hotels near the places of concerts (laughs)! It's even real and weird when we think that we live in such a little town, unbelievable!
10. Coming form such a little town and living all of these changes, isn't that frightening?
Tom: Yes, a little. Sometimes, it's alittle bit hard to be far fromhome, you miss friends, family too. But we have a permanent contact with them. Furthermore, we really are fond of what we do, we don't have time to complain or missing something. So, you see, what really bother us for the moment, is to do exactly what we like, and recording what we always wanted to play.
